Anxiety
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, characterised by excessive fear, worry, and related behavioural difficulties. They include conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, phobias, and others. While occasional anxiety is a normal part of life, anxiety disorders involve persistent and intense symptoms that interfere with daily functioning.
Psychological therapy is a highly effective treatment for anxiety disorders. There are a range of psychological therapies that are recognised as effective to treat anxiety. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), helps individuals recognise and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that fuel anxiety. Mindfulness-based approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and exposure therapy, also provide valuable tools for managing symptoms by promoting acceptance, emotional regulation, and gradual desensitisation to feared situations. Additionally, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is effective for anxiety, particularly for individuals who experience high levels of self-criticism or shame alongside anxiety. CFT works by helping individuals develop self-compassion, build a supportive inner voice, and regulate emotional responses through compassionate thinking and behaviour.
Through these therapeutic techniques, individuals can gain insight into the nature of their anxiety, develop coping strategies, and build confidence in facing challenging situations, leading to improved well-being and functioning.
