ADHD

ADHD is a form of neurodivergence experienced by around 5% of the population and is increasingly recognised in adults. For many, traits may not have been identified in childhood or were managed with personal strengths and coping strategies, only becoming more noticeable as life circumstances and responsibilities evolve.

ADHD can shape how you engage in many areas of life—such as work, relationships, and wellbeing—and support is available. Gaining insight into your unique strengths and areas of difficulty through a comprehensive assessment can be an empowering first step.

At Open Horizons Psychology, we offer comprehensive assessments for ADHD in adults that include a thorough evaluation, diagnosis, and personalised management plan. There is no single test for ADHD; assessments typically combine several approaches, including self-report scales, interviews, and input from people who know you well. Exploring whether ADHD is part of your experience can be a valuable step toward deeper self-understanding and tailored strategies for success.

Alongside assessment, we also provide psychological therapy for ADHD. Our approach is collaborative and strengths-based, focusing on helping you harness your natural abilities while developing practical tools to navigate areas of challenge. Therapy may involve building strategies for attention, organisation, and emotional regulation, as well as supporting self-esteem, motivation, and relationships. We work with you to recognise and value your unique ways of thinking and problem-solving, while exploring approaches that align with your strengths and what matters most to you.

YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH

Adolescence is a time of growth, change, and discovery. It’s a time when you’re figuring out who you are, learning new things, and gaining skills for the future. It can be exciting, but also a little overwhelming, as your brain and body go through lots of changes that can affect how you feel, think, and connect with others.

It’s important to remember that adolescence is also when mental health challenges can show up. Research shows that one in four young Australians will experience a mental health struggle. Even if you have a strong support system, challenges can still arise, and it’s important to deal with them early.

The good news is that reaching out for support early can make a real difference.  Taking the time to understand what you’re going through, feeling supported, and learning practical skills can help you build resilience, regain a sense of control, and improve your overall wellbeing.

At Open Horizons Psychology, we’re here to support young people and those who care for them. Our team of experienced psychologists works with adolescents, young adults, and families in a way that’s real, understanding, and tailored to what you’re going through.

Stress and Burnout

Life can be full of demands—work, family, relationships, health, and the pressure to "keep it all together." It's completely normal to feel stressed at times. But when stress becomes overwhelming or constant, it can take a serious toll on your wellbeing. If you're feeling exhausted, disconnected, or just not like yourself lately, you might be experiencing burnout.

What is Stress?

Stress is your body’s natural response to pressure or challenges. A little stress can even be helpful, giving you the energy to focus or meet a deadline. But when it builds up or goes on too long, it can lead to emotional and physical strain. You might notice:

  • Trouble sleeping or relaxing

  • Feeling anxious or irritable

  • Muscle tension, headaches, or fatigue

  • Difficulty concentrating

What is Burnout?

Burnout is a deeper, more persistent form of stress. It often comes from feeling overworked, undervalued, or emotionally drained over time—especially in work or caregiving roles. Common signs include:

  • Feeling emotionally “flat” or numb

  • Loss of motivation or joy in things you used to enjoy

  • Increased cynicism or detachment

  • A sense of helplessness or being stuck

At Open Horizons Psychology, we understand how stress and burnout can impact every part of your life. Therapy offers a safe, supportive space to:

  • Understand what’s contributing to your stress or burnout

  • Learn practical tools to manage emotions and regain energy

  • Reconnect with your sense of purpose and wellbeing
